Resume review by Markus Fink, former technical recruiter

I hired backend and infrastructure engineers at Google and Airbnb for eleven years. Send me your resume and I'll tell you what a recruiter sees in the first thirty seconds, then send back an edited copy.

What you get back

From a sample review of a made-up backend engineer's resume.

Your bullet

Responsible for migrating the payments ledger from the Rails monolith to a new Go service

My note

"Responsible for" tells me you were in the room. Say you moved it, and how much goes through it. Then make it your first bullet.

Moved the payments ledger out of the Rails monolith into a Go service that records [X] transactions a day

[X] is a number only you know, so I leave it for you to fill in.

Your resume, marked up

Software Engineer II

2021 to now

Northwind Pay, payments infrastructure

  • • Worked on various backend features for the checkout team
  • 1 Leveraged Kafka to build a robust pipeline for order events, ensuring seamless data flow to the fraud and billing teams
  • 2 Improved checkout API performance with Redis caching
  • 3 Responsible for migrating the payments ledger from the Rails monolith to a new Go service

Cut the first bullet. Move 3 to the top.

How an AI screener sums you up

Before: Backend engineer at a payments company who worked on checkout features, Kafka and Redis.

After: Backend engineer who moved a payments ledger from Rails to Go and built the event pipeline for fraud and billing.

Notes from Markus

You're applying for senior backend roles, and the most senior thing you've done is the ledger migration. Right now it's your last bullet, under one that says "various backend features". A recruiter reads the top two bullets of your current job and decides from those. Lead with the ledger and this reads like a senior engineer's resume.

  1. 1
    Sounds AI-written

Leveraged, robust, seamless. I see these words on half the resumes I get this year and my eyes skip right over them. Cut them and the bullet gets shorter without losing anything.

Built the Kafka pipeline that feeds order events to the fraud and billing teams

  2. 2
    Missing number

"Improved performance" is the most common bullet I read. One number makes it yours, and you're the only one who knows it.

Cut checkout API p95 latency by [X]% with a Redis read cache

You fill in [X]: By roughly what percent did p95 latency drop?

  3. 3
    Ownership

"Responsible for" tells me you were in the room. Say you moved it, and how much goes through it. Then make it your first bullet.

Moved the payments ledger out of the Rails monolith into a Go service that records [X] transactions a day

You fill in [X]: Roughly how many transactions a day go through the ledger?

Questions

How much of the review is AI? +

SWE Resume runs its AI analysis on your resume first, and Markus uses it as a starting draft. He keeps what he agrees with, rewrites what he doesn't and adds what it missed, like which job to lead with. Every note you get back is one he wrote or rewrote.

What do I get back? +

Notes from Markus and an edited copy of your resume. The edited copy appears in your resume list marked "Reviewed by Markus", and you get one email when it is ready. The review also unlocks the full AI analysis for that resume.

Will a review get me interviews? +

It makes your experience easier to see on the first read. It can't guarantee interviews, which still depend on the roles you apply to, the market and your background.

Do I need to build my resume in SWE Resume first? +

No. Upload the PDF you already send to employers on this page and it goes to Markus. If you have built a resume in the app, you can send that one from the app instead.

Who sees my resume? +

Your PDF is saved to your SWE Resume account. Markus reads it, and the AI analysis is run on it. It isn't sold or shared with employers, and you can delete it from your resume list at any time. The Privacy Policy has the details.

Can I get a refund? +

Yes, until your review is delivered. You can cancel any time before Markus sends it, including if it is taking longer than 48 hours, and a one-time purchase is refunded in full. Once a review has been delivered it is non-refundable. An unused one-time review can be refunded within 14 days of purchase. The Terms of Service have the full policy.

Who is the monthly plan for? +

People who are job hunting for a few months and rewrite their resume for different roles. It is $59 a month for two reviews plus 20 unlocks of the full AI analysis for your other resumes, both reset each month, and you can cancel anytime. If you only need one resume looked at, the $49 review is the better deal.
